With all of that, I was fortunate enough to have parents that got me out and put me in another country to be a better person. I left Somalia when I was 16 years old and I was there for the war when there were killings, rape and weapons everywhere. There’s been a war in Somalia for the last 24 years. Before we shot any scenes, I would try to stay in character as I talked with the other guys who played the pirates.įrom your perspective, is Muse a bad guy?īA: Of course. As I saw him do that so quickly, it helped me prepare for my role with less difficulty. Paul would go on to tell me to make the character my own.īA: I learned that he’s really a hard working man and what elevated my game was how fast he becomes the character. I knew what was going on and how the story finishes. I didn’t read the book until I got the part. I had also seen clips from the history channel when then did a reenactment. How much did you know of the actual story?īA: I knew of the real situation. I just like to try out new opportunities. I was never an actor or didn’t think I would get the role. I had shot videos in town and so I’ve had experience with the camera, but that was it. When I got there, there were too many people. I was at my friend’s house watching TV and saw on the local TV channel that there were auditions for local Somalis for a film.
